How does
life work?

From Aristotle's dissections to DNA and proteins predicted by AI

500 BC – 499

Observing Life

Attempts began to explain disease by natural causes rather than divine punishment, and Aristotle founded a biology based on dissection and observation. The medical system left by the Roman physician Galen held absolute authority for 1,400 years.

Islamic Medicine and Medieval Anatomy

The Islamic world inherited Greek medicine and developed it further. Human dissection began in European universities, but it mostly served to confirm Galen's books.

Anatomy and the Microscope

Firsthand dissection toppled ancient authority, and calculation proved the circulation of the blood. The microscope opened up the previously invisible worlds of cells and microbes.

Classification and Natural History

Work proceeded to name and order the countless organisms pouring in from around the world. The cautious idea emerged that the Earth and its living things were much older, and more changeable, than people had thought.

Before Evolution, and the Cell Theory

Extinction was proved real, and the first theory of evolution appeared. Geology's idea of an immensely old Earth gave Darwin the time he needed. And it was shown that all living things are made of cells.

Darwin, Mendel and Microbes

The theory of natural selection unified biology, and the laws of heredity were discovered in a monastery garden, though no one noticed. Pasteur and Koch proved that microbes cause disease and transformed medicine.

The Synthesis of Genetics and Evolution

Mendel was rediscovered, and genes were shown to lie on chromosomes. Mathematics merged Mendelian genetics, which at first seemed to clash with Darwin, with the theory of evolution. Medicine gained insulin and antibiotics.

The Molecular Biology Revolution

The structure of DNA was revealed and the genetic code was cracked. In just 20 years it became clear how life's information is stored, copied and read.

Reading and Rewriting Life

With tools to cut, paste, read and copy DNA, biology became an engineering discipline that could alter life. Evolution was reinterpreted from the gene's point of view, and a project began to read the entire human genome.

Life Becomes Data

As sequencing costs collapsed, biology became a data science. Scientists now rewind cells, edit genes, make vaccines in months and predict the shapes of proteins with AI.
